What She Wore
Jogging shorts
a loose t-shirt
socks and old
gym shoes
a corset under
a dress of silk
with layers
and layers
of tulle
a homespun
woolen shift
with stains
from work
and stress
a hide just
tanned with
piss and brains
and under that -
her skin.
Pursuit
We’ve been chasing
lightning bugs
but catching
sleeping wasps –
hands groping
deep in dark
for a tiny glow
but finding stings
in the shadows –
and for a moment
the wasps lay still
daggers in a clenching hand –
then they wake
to feel the skin
and stab us
to be free again.

She was great at showing off
her linguistic skill
when referring to
the “unmentionables” -
how could I associate with
they them those
that thing -
but mention preferred
pronouns
and watch the intellect
drain from her brain
to fill her mouth
with words of
hate.
